Recognise the fresh-faced Scot grinning at the camera? Young Alex Ferguson was a happy man on this day in 1963 - the first time he made his mark in football. 

Struggling to establish himself as a centre-forward with St Johnstone reserves and seriously considering giving up football to join his family in Canada, 21-year-old Ferguson was called on to play against Rangers just before Christmas.

The former Queen's Park forward scored a hat-trick at Ibrox. The papers were full of the story and he became a full-time pro the next season with Dunfermline. 

It was the first of many back pages for the legendary 68-year-old Manchester United manager who returns to Rangers tonight - one of six clubs he went on to represent in a playing career which saw him score 170 goals in 317 appearances. 

Ferguson switched to management in 1974 with East Stirlingshire, followed by spells at St Mirren and Aberdeen before being appointed at Old Trafford in 1986. 

Back in the Sixties, the only hairdryer Fergie needed was for that splendid fringe.
