Manchester United's return to the top of the Premier League after last night's 1-1 draw at Birmingham City was a cause of resentment more than delight. They lead on goal difference over Manchester City, with two games in hand, because of an equaliser by Birmingham's Lee Bowyer in the 89th minute. Sir Alex Ferguson expressed disbelief as much as anger over the decision by the referee, Lee Mason.

The controversy surrounded a challenge by the Birmingham substitute Nikola Zigic on Rio Ferdinand before the ball broke for Bowyer to score. "It was handball and a foul on the centre-half," the United manager said. "He went straight through him. If the referee can't see that what chance have you got? In a game of that importance you expect to have a referee who can see that. I have no complaints with my team. They fought hard, they worked hard after a two-day rest. They ran their socks off to get a result and it's hard on them."

His opposite number tacitly conceded that a lapse by the officials had spared his side. "We got a bit of luck," Alex McLeish said, "but with all the bad luck we've had I think we deserved it." He also suggested that Zigic's handling of the ball was inadvertent.

United still have just one away win in the league this season, at Stoke City, in October. "I think it's terribly harsh," Ferguson said. "We outplayed them. We didn't deserve that [equaliser]. It's a difficult place to come to. Everyone who comes here has a difficult game.

"We were the better team and maybe should have finished them off after we went 1-0 up. A number of times we counterattacked against them and just needed a bit more care in our finishing pass or finishing shot." (continues..)

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish admits he's impressed by next opponents Manchester United.

McLeish was at Old Trafford on Boxing Day to watch Sir Alex Ferguson's side maintain their unbeaten Premier League record this season with a win over Sunderland.

"They were pretty impressive," he said.

"Someday, Man United will lose a game, and I'm hoping and believing it's us that can do that.

"We're at St Andrew's, and I think we have to believe.

"We've upset the big teams before, and it would be nice if we can do that again.

"We've heard opposition managers of those teams say it's a difficult place to come to and we want United to be saying that after the game."

Even after this, Sir Alex Ferguson might wonder if his players really do have the cojones to win this season’s title race.

He challenged them to demonstrate that they do ahead of this encounter, and they responded by teasing him with a perfectly competent, yet strangely tentative display.

Sure, they were terrific at times, performing with fluency and finesse and proving far too strong for a Sunderland team that struggled in the absence of seven players.

But that finesse too often lacked a finishing touch and Ferguson is sure to demand more.

The manager wants to see that they have ‘balls’, and yesterday at Old Trafford they seemed a little reluctant to show him. ‘They put the tools away in the second half,’ said Ferguson. ‘They were very economical, playing in third gear.’

It would help, of course, if Wayne Rooney could just remember how to score in open play.

Heading for a win: Bulgarian striker Berbatov gives United the perfect start with an early opener at Old Trafford

Dimitar Berbatov has now struck 13 times in 13 Barclays Premier League starts this season after two more here. But Rooney still has to think back to March since scoring from anywhere other than the penalty spot for Manchester United and this would have been a source of yet more frustration.

As Ferguson quite rightly pointed out, Rooney is at least playing well and the manner in which he combined with Berbatov is becoming a joy to watch.

His lofted delivery for Berbatov’s opening goal was fantastic and it was almost touching to see the Bulgarian doing his hardest to repay the favour. There is a mutual respect there that Ferguson could certainly liken to Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole..(continue)

Steve Bruce is still waiting for his first victory over Sir Alex Ferguson in 17 games and the Sunderland manager admitted yesterday, following his side's 2-0 defeat, that he was "naïve" to pick such an open, attacking team at Old Trafford.

Bruce was without seven first-team players for the game against Manchester United and said that he had little choice but to pick a side with two wingers and two strikers. "Maybe I was a bit naïve to think we could do it but to be fair I didn't have much choice," he said.

"We were so open with two out-and-out wide players and two out-and-out attackers but with the sickness and injuries in the squad there was not much we could do about. When we beat Chelsea [at Stamford Bridge] we had a full team. That doesn't take away from the lads who were playing but we felt we were well beaten."

Bruce, whose team host Blackpool tomorrow, will have the United loan signing Danny Welbeck (ineligible yesterday) and Lee Cattermole back from suspension as well as Kieran Richardson and Titus Bramble in contention. Yesterday he was forced into playing Christian Riveros in midfield and Bolo Zenden and Steed Malbranque on the wing.

On United's title prospects, Bruce said that he expected Ferguson's team to get even better in the new year. "They have been first or second for the last six years," he said. "They have been there or thereabouts and usually they get better from now on in..(continue)

Sir Alex Ferguson is planning a January raid to bring in Real Madrid defensive midfielder Lassana Diarra. The French international has stated his intention to leave the Bernabeu at the earliest available opportunity and the Manchester United boss is looking to add more steel to the centre of his midfield and hopes to land the want-away star on a cut price deal.Earlier this month Diarra spoke out about his situation at Real Madrid

‘I’m at Real Madrid and I have a contract. Currently I am thinking only of the next game, but I don’t know if I will remain here. I previously said I would assess my situation in January.’

Jose Mourinho appears to see Diarra as little more than a bench warmer and the 25 year old has rarely been on the Real Madrid boss’s starting eleven team sheet and after two and a half difficult seasons at the La Liga giants the former Portsmouth, Chelsea and Arsenal man is ready to quit the club.The good relationship between the two manager’s could help to resolve the long running problems between the two clubs that relate to a number of Man United stars leaving the Premier League side for a move to Madrid and Mourinho is looking to cut his massive squad in order to trim costs.

Some sources believe pint sized battler could be available for around £12m a fee that Ferguson will be happy to pay given the paucity of out and out defensive midfield options he has at the club given the long term injury concerns over Owen Hargreaves.

Could Ronaldinho Be Like Larsson..??!!

Sir Alex Ferguson loves to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the transfer market and two iconic figures could provide him with another potential for a mid-season masterstroke.

In the 2007 January transfer window the United boss acted on impulse and an encouraging tip-off from his chief scout that Henrik Larsson might be tempted by a loan move to the Reds.

United were in need of a winter pick-me-up and the legendary Swedish striker made the temporary switch from Helsingborg.

Larsson scored on his debut to win an FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa, scored as a sub in a 4-0 league win against Watford and bagged the winner against Lille in a Champions League last 16 second leg tie.

Three goals in 13 appearances are the simple black and white stats of Larsson’s impact. But his stamp on the dressing room lifted the Reds.

Even established stalwart figures among the United camp were buoyed by his arrival.

In his final match at Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, the Reds dressing room stood to a man to applaud the striker when he came off the field at the Riverside.

It was a touching and spontaneous gesture that rubber-stamped Ferguson’s masterstroke and it paid dividends as United went on from that mid-term fillip to win back the Premier League crown from Chelsea.

With permanent big name imports unlikely this transfer window, may the United manager would be tempted to do ‘a Larsson’ again to bolster the table-topping Reds?

Another Midfielder Rumored To United...Modric!!!

Manchester United will lure Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric in the summer and Sir Alex Ferguson believes he will win the race for the Croat who he believes will help give his Old Trafford side the added creativity in his midfield which he believes is lacking.

Harry Redknapp will fight tooth and nail to keep the 25 year old at White Hart Lane but even if the north London side manages to cement another top four finish the former Dinamo Zagreb man will find it hard to resist the temptation of joining a side who can fight for significant silverware.

It would take a bid in the region of £30m to land the pint sized adaptable midfielder and Ferguson is thought to have placed Modric at the head of his summer wish-list and may also be willing to offer a Man United player as part of any deal to land the Spurs man. The likes of experienced campaigners Wes Brown, Michael Carrick or youngsters Anderson, Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverley could be offered to sweeten the deal.

Whilst Tottenham’s progress under Harry Redknapp has been nothing short of astounding Ferguson will still feel that the gravitas of a move to arguably one of the biggest clubs on the planet will be too much of a pull for the Croatian international to ignore.

Now in his third season since moving to White Hart Lane for £16.5m , Modric has been a phenomenal success and is now thought to be wanted by a number of Europe’s elite and Redknapp will find it hard to fend off interest in his services next summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED striker Dimitar Berbatov told reporters to stop voting for him after being named Bulgaria’s Footballer of the Year for a seventh time yesterday. “I prefer to see some of the younger lads winning the award,” the 29-year-old said after coming top in the poll of sports journalists. “Please, don’t vote for me anymore.”

Bulgaria’s all-time leading scorer, with 48 goals, quit the national team in May citing fatigue and family commitments. Last month, he became only the fourth player to score five times in one Premier League match when he helped destroy Blackburn Rovers in a 7-1 win. Berbatov expects to spend the rest of his career at United. “I fought to have a chance to play for United and now I can only go down if I leave,” he said. “Why I should do this? It would be better to retire.”
