The rivalry between Chelsea and Manchester United is relatively new, but there have been plenty of classic encounters, including of course a Champions League final.

In the interests of fairness there are three wins for each team. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate the video of Manchester United’s incredible 5-3 victory at Chelsea in 1998, the six games below do though encompass what is an intriguing, and often pivotal rivalry in English football.

1. Manchester United 4 – Chelsea 0 (FA Cup final, May 14, 1994). Manchester United went into the game looking to secure their first ever domestic double against the Blues who had surprisingly beaten them 1-0 in both the league games earlier in the season. Gavin Peacock hit the bar in the first half for Chelsea but after the hour Sir Alex Ferguson’s side proved their class. A brace of cool and calm penalties from Eric Cantona won the match before goals from Mark Hughes and Brian McClair sealed a comprehensive victory.

2. Chelsea 5 – Manchester United 0 (Premier League, October 3, 1999). Similarly to Manchester United this weekend, the Red Devils arrived at Stamford Bridge on a long unbeaten run that had lasted 29 games but Chelsea had other ideas. Gus Poyet put the Blues in front after just 27 seconds, beating Massimo Taibi to a deep cross from Dan Petrescu and Chris Sutton added a second to complete an incredible start for the home side. Nicky Butt’s sending off shortly after meant the result was only going to go one way and second half goals from Gus Poyet, an own goal by Henning Berg and Jody Morris completed a famous win.

3. Chelsea 3 – Manchester United 0 (Premier League, April 29, 2006). Jose Mourinho’s side completed their second successive Premier League title with an easy victory over United. The Blues needed just a point to secure top spot and were in front after just five minutes thanks to a William Gallas header. Joe Cole stole the headlines with a cracking second before Ricardo Carvalho completed the win in front of a delirious Stamford Bridge. Wayne Rooney’s injury would leave England on tenter hooks with the World Cup just weeks away.

4. Chelsea 1 – Manchester United 0 (FA Cup final, May 19, 2007) Didier Drogba was the match winner with a late goal in extra-time to secure a final win for Chelsea. The two teams very much cancelled each other out in the first FA Cup final back at the new Wembley stadium and the Ivorian poked in the only goal of the game after playing a one-two with Frank Lamaprd.

5. Manchester United 1* – Chelsea 1 (Pens. 6-5) (Champions League final, May 21, 2008) The biggest fixture played between these two clubs and in retrospect the height of recent English dominance in the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo headed United in front only for Frank Lampard to equalise before the break. A fast paced game went into extra-time where Frank Lampard hit the post and Ryan Giggs had a shot blocked on the line by John Terry. The Chelsea captain famously slipped on the Luzhniki Stadium turf when taking his penalty to win the match in the shoot-out and Edwin van der Sar denied Avram Grant’s side with the key penalty save from Nicolas Anelka.

6. Manchester United 3 – Chelsea 0 (Premier League, January 11, 2009). One of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s final matches in charge of Chelsea. And whilst the Jose Mourinho years had seen Chelsea regularly beat United, Sir Alex Ferguson was now coming to grips with beating off the Blues. Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov were on the scoresheet for United who would eventually win a close fought title race with Liverpool. The game also saw a rather clever (sneaky?) free-kick routine from Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney that could have seen one of the most memorable goals had Howard Webb not wrongly disallowed it.

Here, we look back at some famous feuds between the two clubs over the past two decades.

OCTOBER 1990

MAN UTD 0 ARSENAL 1

Nigel Winterburn's lunge at Denis Irwin 20 years ago sparked a 21-man brawl, which is widely considered the starting point of the bad blood between the two clubs. The Red Devils lost one point, while George Graham's Gunners -- who won this encounter 1-0 thanks to Anders Limpar's goal -- were docked two, but, nevertheless, went on to win the league title.

NOVEMBER 1997

ARSENAL 3 MAN UTD 2

This encounter was marred by fan violence, with United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel and Arsenal full-back Winterburn struck by coins.

Former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham was accused of inciting the home crowd after scoring. His brace cancelled out earlier strikes from Nicolas Anelka and Patrick Vieira, but David Platt's late header won it for the hosts.

SEPTEMBER 2003

MAN UTD 0 ARSENAL 0

Ruud van Nistelrooy blasted a stoppage-time penalty against the bar as 10-man Arsenal clung on for a point at Old Trafford.

Several Arsenal players -- led by Martin Keown and including a clear shove by Lauren -- celebrated directly in Van Nistelrooy's face as he walked away from his failed spot-kick. This was followed by a melee in which Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to square up to the Arsenal players and Kolo Toure seemed to clash with Van Nistelrooy as the tension boiled over. The Gunners had seen skipper Vieira dismissed for a petulant kick at Van Nistelrooy minutes earlier, but the award of the spot-kick for a foul on Diego Forlan saw both sides involved in face-to-face skirmishes, which continued after the final whistle had gone.

OCTOBER 2004

MAN UTD 2 ARSENAL 0

Angry Arsenal stormed out of Old Trafford fuming with referee Mike Riley after Van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney combined to shatter their 49-game unbeaten run in what was later dubbed 'the battle of the buffet' after a slice of pizza was allegedly thrown at Alex Ferguson by an Arsenal player.

Ferguson was confronted in the players' tunnel immediately after the game and was forced to change out of his suit into a tracksuit to conduct post-game TV interviews.

FEBRUARY 2005

ARSENAL 2 MAN UTD 4

The rivalry between respective captains Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira boiled over on numerous occasions, notably with an angry altercation in the tunnel before their match at Highbury in February 2005.

Vieira stood accused of trying to intimidate Gary Neville as the teams lined up to walk out on to the pitch. Keane intervened in the dispute and the two captains had to be separated by referee Graham Poll, with the bad blood continuing out on the pitch in a titanic tussle. Keane declared: "Patrick Vieira is 6ft 4in and having a go at Gary Neville. So I said, 'have a go at me'.

"If he wants to intimidate our players and thinks that Gary Neville is an easy target. I'm not having it." Vieira defended himself, insisting: "I didn't threaten anybody. They are big enough players to handle themselves."

10 Samir Nasri, Emirates, November 8 2008(Arsenal 2-1 Man Utd)

The possession football created by Arsenal's intricate passing game has been criticised by some as pretty but punch-less; yet when Samir Nasri speared the ball past Edwin van der Sar from the edge of the area it was the consummate team goal: the culmination of a mesmeric 16-pass move in which United chased shadows as the point of the attack was repeatedly switched. Cesc Fabregas supplied the final pass as Theo Walcott's run took Nemanja Vidic away from the centre and Nasri's own run set him up perfectly for the decisive strike. 9 Ian Wright, Wembley, August 7 1993 (1-1, Man Utd won 5-4 on penalties) 

The Red Devils had just ended a 26-year wait to become champions by winning the inaugural Premier League title. Arsenal had just become the first club to win England's two major domestic cups in the same season. This Charity Shield curtain-raiser in the Wembley sunshine was further illuminated when Ryan Giggs lobbed a misplaced pass infield and Paul Davis nodded the ball towards the predatory Ian Wright on the edge of the box. Wright instantly hooked a ferocious half-volley beyond a startled Peter Schmeichel for the Gunners' equaliser. To view the clip click here..

8 Patrick Vieira, Highbury, November 9 1997 (Arsenal 3-2 Man Utd)

United were hunting a third successive title when they visited North London; but Arsenal, in Arsene Wenger's first full season, would come thrillingly from behind to overtake them in the spring. This game, which featured three outstanding Arsenal goals, helped crystallise belief at Highbury. The pick of the bunch was Patrick Vieira's unstoppable effort. Ray Parlour's corner was headed clear at the near post by Henning Berg, but only as far as the 18-yard line, where Vieira, without breaking stride, hammered it over Schmeichel and in off the underside of the bar. His celebratory slide ironically ruled him out until Boxing Day with a knee injury. To view the clip click here..

7 Cristiano Ronaldo, Emirates, May 5 2009 (Arsenal 1-3 Man Utd)

When United and Arsenal were paired in the Champions League semi-final, Sir Alex Ferguson's side underlined their superiority, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford before eclipsing the Gunners in London. Men against babes, Patrice Evra called it. Cristiano Ronaldo had already scored United's second with a sublime free kick before putting the tie beyond Arsenal, supplying the finishing touch to this breathtaking counter-attack which he himself launched with a slick back-heel to Ji-Sung Park, who carried it forward with a precision pass to Wayne Rooney, who set up Ronaldo to complete the job in high style. 6 Freddie Ljungberg, Highbury Nov 25 2001 (Arsenal 3-1 Man Utd)

Arsenal had been runners-up to United three seasons on the trot, and been hammered 6-1 away in their last meeting, so when Paul Scholes gave the Red Devils an early lead at Highbury, it seemed like business as usual. But Freddie Ljungberg, a frequent thorn in United's side, turned the tide with a moment of sublime technique. Robert Pires intercepted Gary Neville’s lax pass and set off downfield. When Kanu drew two United defenders into the middle, Pires picked out Ljungberg on the right. The Swede took one touch with his right foot before deftly lofting the ball over Fabien Barthez from the edge of the area. 5 Thierry Henry, Highbury, Mar 28 2004 (Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd)

United would later beat Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final, but in the league the Gunners were invincible, and when the two clashed at Highbury, Wenger's side set a new record: 30 games unbeaten from the start of a season. In this typically high-octane contest, the deadlock was broken shortly after the break when Thierry Henry swapped passes with Jose Antonio Reyes some 25 yards out. There seemed little immediate danger to United until Henry unleashed a textbook drive of awesome power and venomous swerve that rocketed into the roof of Roy Carroll's net. 4 Wayne Rooney, Emirates, Jan 31 2010 (Arsenal 1-3 Man Utd)

If United have identified and exploited an Arsenal weakness in recent meetings it's the Gunners' vulnerability to a swift counter-attack. Springing from defence to attack with lightning speed, they sliced through Arsenal's defences like the proverbial knife through butter with a superb goal memorable for the sheer commitment and lung-busting energy of Rooney, who sprinted from box to box to ensure he was in the right place to meet Nani's perfect pass - after the Portuguese winger's own surging run in possession - and sweep it in his majestic stride across Manuel Almunia into the Arsenal net.

3 David Rocastle, Old Trafford, Oct 19 1991 (Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal)

'Rocky' had been a somewhat peripheral figure when Arsenal won the title in 1990-91, but the following season he was back to his best, and his strike at Old Trafford showcased his tenacity, control and technique from central midfield. Rocastle beat Neil Webb to a loose ball in the centre circle and took it forward, using his strength to shrug off Paul Ince's robust challenge before leaving Bryan Robson in his wake with some clever footwork. Looking up and spying Schmeichel a little way off his line, Rocastle caressed a delicate chip over the keeper from fully 25 yards. The ball hit the underside of the bar and bounced in off Schmeichel's back, but Rocastle deserved that bit of luck for his virtuosity. To view the clip click here..

2 Ryan Giggs, Villa Park, April 14 1999 (Man Utd 2-1 Arsenal aet)

In the last ever FA Cup semi-final replay, Ryan Giggs scored one of that venerable competition's most memorable goals - setting United on the glorious last lap of an unprecedented treble. It was a goal worthy of deciding a gem of a match that had everything. David Beckham had put Ferguson’s side ahead early on with a superb shot before Dennis Bergkamp equalised. Nicolas Anelka had a goal disallowed for offside before Roy Keane was sent-off. In injury-time, Parlour was fouled by Phil Neville in the box, only for Bergkamp's penalty to be brilliantly saved by Schmeichel. Then in the second period of extra-time, Giggs intercepted a misplaced Vieira pass and set off on a dazzling dribble, beating defender after defender before lashing the ball into the roof of David Seaman’s net from a rapidly narrowing angle. 1 Thierry Henry, Highbury, October 1 2000 (Arsenal 1-0 Man Utd)

For sheer improvisational brilliance, Henry's effort takes the crown. It was conjured out of virtually nothing when, 30 minutes into a close contest, Gilles Grimandi played a ball into Henry's feet with the Frenchman a good 20 yards out, facing his own goal and with Denis Irwin on his shoulder looking to challenge. Holding off his marker, Henry produced a moment of seamless fluidity, flicking the ball up, pirouetting and hitting a sensational volley that soared then dipped over Barthez into the net. Rio Ferdinand completed 90 minutes against Wigan

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Rio Ferdinand will not travel with the Manchester United squad as they fly out to face Rangers in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United currently top Group C and need one more point to guarantee their qualification for the knockout stages. Defeat would leave the Red Devils needing to get something out of their final fixture at home to Valencia.

Ferdinand picked up a groin injury on international duty with England, although it was not bad enough to rule him out of the weekend win over Wigan. However, the United boss revealed he will not risk aggravating the problem in Glasgow.

"Rio has a groin injury now," Ferguson said. "We won't be taking him up to Glasgow to face Rangers in the Champions League on Wednesday, I wouldn't think."

Ferguson had no problems with the England management regarding Ferdinand's injury, despite the midweek fixture only being a friendly. Liverpool expressed their displeasure after Steven Gerrard was sidelined for a month by a hamstring problem, but Ferguson accepted that injuries will happen on international duty...continued

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that Manchester Unitedstriker Wayne Rooney will start against Rangers in the Champions League on Wednesday after appearing as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Rooney hasn’t started a game for United since the visit to Bolton Wanderers back in September when he picked up an ankle injury, and has since been on holiday in Dubai and taken part in a training camp in America.

“I’ll play him [Wayne Rooney] against Rangers now,” Ferguson told Sky Sports News. “I think that’s the sort of game I can give him a full 90 minutes in and he can gradually get back to his best form.

“Wayne got a great reception today and that is satisfying. I think it’s taken a lot of pressure off the boy knowing that he got the reception he did.”

United were not at their best again in the victory against Wigan, but capitalised as the visitors were reduced to nine men.

“The half-time break was a great one for us. We hadn’t played well enough to be ahead at that point, although we did have control of the game and a couple of good breakaways," added Sir Alex.

“In the main we are having to try and break teams like this down. The funny thing about our performances at the moment is we seem to be playing our best football in the last 20 minutes of the match...continued
