League Championships History : Trophy No 7...1966/67!!

During the summer of 1966 England had won the World Cup, three Manchester United players contributed to the national team’s success – Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles and John Connelly. By this point United were in football fans’ hearts – wherever Busby took them, supporters would flock. Over 1 million fans attended United’s matches throughout the 1966-67 season with the average gate at Old Trafford reaching 53,800. The third great team Matt Busby had created was the most entertaining side in the country.
United began their season with back to back victories over West Brom and Everton, before losing to rivals Leeds. Six losses in the first half of the season was perhaps not the fine form expected by league champions, however following a 2-1 loss to Sheffield United on Boxing Day they didn’t lose another league match all season. Best, Law and Charlton quite simply blew everyone else away – scoring 10, 12 and 25 goals respectively.
United secured their seventh league title in the penultimate match of the season, thrashing West Ham United 6-1 at Upton Park. The Hammers boasted World Cup winners Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, yet they relied far too heavily on their trio. United never had that issue, their holy trinity was backed up by the likes of Stiles, Foulkes, Crerand and David Herd, the latter contributing 18 goals throughout the season. This was much to the dismay of the east-end Hammers fans, who proceeded to throw bricks at United’s travelling support.
However the season, and United’s holy trinity, was coming to an end. In the dressing room following United’s victory at Upton Park a famous photograph was taken. The players were celebrating their league championship with champagne (interestingly, Best is the only one without a glass in his hand!) – the majority of them were to experience even greater glory the following season but there was one player who missed much of the celebration of the following year, Denis Law. The Scot got injured mid-way through the 1967 season and spent much of the following six years on United’s treatment table. Is it a coincidence that United would fail to win the league title again for another 26 years?
