Sir Alex Dapat DEGREE...??!!

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be honoured by a university on Wednesday for his 'outstanding contribution' to sport.
The 69-year-old will be made a doctor of the University of Stirling.
The visit will take Ferguson back to his footballing roots in central Scotland, where he played with Falkirk from 1969 to 1973.
Glasgow-born Ferguson also started his managerial career at nearby East Stirlingshire in 1974.
The university said the award will recognise Ferguson's 'great distinction in the field of sport and the general public arena'.
He will be presented with his doctorate by the university chancellor, broadcaster James Naughtie.
The ceremony in which the football boss is being honoured is one of four graduation ceremonies taking place at the institution on Wednesday and Thursday.

League Championships History : Trophy No 9...1993/94!!

Fergie’s first championship winning season may have been a bit of a bumpy ride, this cannot be said for his second title, a season later. United took the lead in the Premiership table after just four matches – and remained at the summit for the remainder of the season, accumulating a record 92 points from 42 matches.
Whilst Eric Cantona was the inspirational signing from the previous season, it was the acquisition of Roy Keane which positively influenced United the next. The signing of the Irish midfielder, however, was far from straightforward. Ferguson had admired Keane’s tenacity for some time, but he wasn’t alone – Blackburn, and Jack Walker’s millions, were also interesting in the Nottingham Forest player. Keane and Kenny Dalglish (Rovers’ manager at the time) had a verbal agreement that he was to join the title challengers. Spoiling the party, Ferguson took time to express interest in Keane, explaining that United’s ambition was more in line with his own. Understandably Dalglish was incensed but our boss didn’t care, he had his man.
As spring approached United remained coasting in the league but it was a sad day for the club when, on 20th January 1994, Sir Matt Busby passed away peacefully. Old Trafford turned into a temporary shrine to their legend, his influence and effect on the club has never been forgotten. A statue remains outside the ground, perched high up, just where he belongs.
At one point in the season there was talk of a domestic treble – Ferguson himself wasn’t convinced United could do it, “It’s never been done before. Why should we be any different?” He was right. United lost their first final of the season, a 3-1 Coca Cola cup loss to Aston Villa, ironically being managed by Big Ron. The double though, now that was a possibility. They eased to the title, finishing eight points ahead of second placed Blackburn. An FA Cup final was also on the horizon – against Chelsea, who had already done a league double over United during the season. Not this time though, United dismantled the Londoners 4-0 at Wembley to secure their first double.

League Championships History : Trophy No 8...1992/93!!

The dawn of the Premiership era also brought about a new Manchester United. Alex Ferguson had tested the patience of both the board and the fans during his early tenure at the club but an inspirational signing in November 1992 was the boost the club in a way that hadn’t been seen for years. It was difficult to ever envisage United’s success over the last two decades back then and yet here we are now, looking back at the beginning of a new phase in the club’s illustrious history.
Emlyn Hughes, then a columnist with the Daily Mirror, described the signing of Eric Cantona as potentially the “last gamble in charge of Manchester United.” He also coined Cantona the “flashy foreigner,” believing that the Frenchman’s time at the club would be a failure. His signing was perhaps more a set of coincidences rather than a thought out transfer – United had missed out on signing Alan Shearer during the summer of 1992 but a second and third blow was just around the corner as Lee Sharpe was sidelined for three months with meningitis and new signing, Dion Dublin, snapped his leg during a match against Crystal Palace. United went on a seven match winless streak between September-November, which saw them slump to 10th in the Premiership table. And then came Eric Cantona, for the bargain price of £1m, a move which turned United’s season on its head.

With Cantona supporting Mark Hughes on the front line and Brian McClair operating in midfield alongside Paul Ince, United shifted up the gears – disposing of closest title rivals, Aston Villa, with ease as they recorded seven wins on the bounce at the end of the season, winning the league by ten clear points. The turning point in the season came in their match against Sheffield Wednesday in April 1993 – highlighting their never say die attitude. Down 1-0 at Old Trafford with seven minutes to go, United were understandably twitchy before Steve Bruce scored the equaliser. Rather amusingly earlier in the match the referee pulled a muscle and seven minutes were added to the end of the match (the beginning of the well known notion of Fergie time?). In somewhat typical fashion, Bruce scored United’s winner in the sixth of the additional minutes. The famous pictures of Fergie and Brian Kidd celebrating on the sidelines was captured for all to see, whilst the pleasure on Bruce’s face said it all.

With the introduction of Sky TV, fixtures no longer all took place at the same time. United were not playing when Aston Villa took on Oldham in a must win match to stay in contention for the league title and Ferguson had decided not to watch the game live, instead choosing a round of golf with his son. Their game was disturbed by a stranger running across the green to inform the United boss that Villa had lost, instead of being angry that his game had been interrupted, Fergie kissed the stranger.
Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce gleefully lifted the Premiership trophy following United’s final home again of the season against Blackburn. It didn’t take long before the TV camera’s focused on Matt Busby sat in the Director’s Box – proud, satisfied, at what he was witnessing. It had been 26 long years but United were back, and they weren’t ready to be moved.

League Championships History : Trophy No 7...1966/67!!

During the summer of 1966 England had won the World Cup, three Manchester United players contributed to the national team’s success – Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles and John Connelly. By this point United were in football fans’ hearts – wherever Busby took them, supporters would flock. Over 1 million fans attended United’s matches throughout the 1966-67 season with the average gate at Old Trafford reaching 53,800. The third great team Matt Busby had created was the most entertaining side in the country.
United began their season with back to back victories over West Brom and Everton, before losing to rivals Leeds. Six losses in the first half of the season was perhaps not the fine form expected by league champions, however following a 2-1 loss to Sheffield United on Boxing Day they didn’t lose another league match all season. Best, Law and Charlton quite simply blew everyone else away – scoring 10, 12 and 25 goals respectively.
United secured their seventh league title in the penultimate match of the season, thrashing West Ham United 6-1 at Upton Park. The Hammers boasted World Cup winners Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, yet they relied far too heavily on their trio. United never had that issue, their holy trinity was backed up by the likes of Stiles, Foulkes, Crerand and David Herd, the latter contributing 18 goals throughout the season. This was much to the dismay of the east-end Hammers fans, who proceeded to throw bricks at United’s travelling support.
However the season, and United’s holy trinity, was coming to an end. In the dressing room following United’s victory at Upton Park a famous photograph was taken. The players were celebrating their league championship with champagne (interestingly, Best is the only one without a glass in his hand!) – the majority of them were to experience even greater glory the following season but there was one player who missed much of the celebration of the following year, Denis Law. The Scot got injured mid-way through the 1967 season and spent much of the following six years on United’s treatment table. Is it a coincidence that United would fail to win the league title again for another 26 years?

League Championships History : Trophy No 6...1964/65!!

The Third Generation of BUSBY BABES

The long and winding road back was long for Manchester United. They had lost eight players in the Munich air crash in 1958, whilst others were either forced to retire or never played to the same standard again. By 1964 however they were once again a force to be reckoned with and were able to boast the likes of George Best, Nobby Stiles, Denis Law and of course Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes, both Munich survivors.
They hardly began the 1964-65 campaign with a bang, winning just once in their opening six matches but with this United side one felt it wouldn’t be long until they shift up the gears. This was Busby’s third great team and it soon took shape. Denis Law was the most prolific goal scorer throughout the season, finding the back of the net on 39 occasions in all competitions and with contributions from the remaining two thirds of the holy trinity. Law famously said of his partnership with Best and Charlton “We were the Englishman, the Irishman and the Scotsman. Sometimes we plated as if we were one person.”
United were unfortunately not to progress to the FA Cup final as well, however a semi-final replay against rivals, Leeds, ended with the Yorkshire side victorious by one goal to nil. The match however was condemned across the country for bringing thuggery into the game – Law ended up with his shirt half ripped off his back after fighting with Bobby’s brother, Jack, whilst Paddy Crerand wrestled Billy Bremner.  Although United would have the last laugh – beating Leeds to the Division One title on goal difference
Matt Busby had got his formula right once again domestically, however their was one trophy which still eluded him. A trophy he simply had to win, if nothing else but for vindication to Munich. His time would come.

League Championships History : Trophy No 5...1956/57!!

In the summer of 1956 Matt Busby got the letter he had been waiting for. The letter from UEFA, inviting him to participate in the forthcoming season’s European Cup. Busby had visions of European competition for some time but it had always been hampered by the authorities, he wasn’t going to let that happen this time. Having seen how the Football League rejected Chelsea from competing with Europe’s elite the season before, Busby knew he would have a battle on his hands and after getting resistance from the authority, he went straight to the FA. After convincing the governing body that Manchester United would ensure they could fulfil each league fixture as all European matches were mid-week, head of the FA Stanley Rous granted United permission. They were in.
United’s league campaign began with an anti-climactic 2-2 draw with Birmingham City – the current champions were hardly off to a flyer. Nevertheless they went on to win 12 of their next 13 league matches before coming back down to Earth with a 5-2 pummelling in front of 43,000 home fans at the hands of Everton – it would be one of six league losses that season. Yet United still dominated the league, playing football that combined grace with sheer power, scoring 103 goals in 42 league games. Tommy Taylor and Billy Whelan fired them throughout the season with 34 and 33 goals in all competitions. Some argue this was the most prolific side since Preston North End’s Invincibles of 1897.
Of course with the distraction of Europe team rotation was paramount as Bobby Charlton, Jackie Blanchflower and Wilf McGuiness all features more prominently in United’s starting XI. In Europe they were a force to be reckoned with – their first fixture seeing them travel to Brussels to face Anderlecht, a match United won 2-0. The reverse fixture two weeks later generated United’s highest ever European Cup win, battering the Belgian side 10-0 in front of 40,000 fans packed into Maine Road. It was a prerequisite by UEFA that all home grounds of European Cup competitors had floodlights, United’s weren’t installed until later in the season and therefore the first European match staged at Old Trafford was their 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in April 1957. Following a 3-1 loss at the Bernabeu, United were out of the competition. Nevertheless it had been an impressive maiden campaign for United, so much so that at one point in the season Real Madrid offered Busby an eye watering £100,000 a year to coach the Spanish side. As we all know, he rejected it.
Of course they still had all to play for on the home front as United secured their first back to back Division One titles, winning the league by eight points. United also made it to the FA Cup final, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa. But the signs were there, Matt Busby had a side that he knew could dominate domestic football for years to come…
