League Championships History : Trophy No 4...1955/56!!

Team of the Century - 1st Division Champions 1955/6, 1956/7 Top: Colin Webster, Will McGuinness, Jackie Blanchflower, John Dohery, Eddie Colman Middle:Tom Curry (trainer), Bill Foulkes, Bobby Charlton, Fred Goodwin, Ray Wood, Liam Whelan, Mark Jones, Duncan Edwards, Bill Inglis (trainer) Bottom: Dennis Viollet, John Berry, Matt Busby, Roger Byrne, Jimmy Murphy, Tommy Taylor, David Pegg

Matt Busby had called Manchester United’s Division One victory in 1952 “most unexpected.” His ageing side was in dire need of some surgery – Allenby Chilton was 34, Jack Rowley 32, Stan Pearson 33 and captain, Johnny Carey, 34. The problem Busby faced was that he had little in the way of transfer funds in order to actually replace his stars and therefore had to find the replacements within his own club. Busby saw no problems with the youth players plying their trade with assistant manager, Jimmy Murphy, as they developed their own talents.
Over the following couple of seasons John Doherty, David Pegg and Dennis Viollet joined Jackie Blanchflower and Jeff Whitefoot as regular first team stars. Tommy Taylor was also brought in from Barnsley for the now legendary fee of £29,999. The remaining £1 was given to the tea lady at Oakwell so not to saddle Taylor with the burden of being the country’s first £30,000 player. To further compound United’s new youth ethos, 23 year old Roger Bryne took over as club captain when Johnny Carey retired.
Most assumed United would win nothing with kids (a precursor to Alan Hansen perhaps?). In the 1954-55 season they had finished fifth in the league, but still only five points behind league champions, Chelsea. It was a sign of the United supporters belief in their side when just 22,000 fans turned up to Old Trafford in November 1955 to watch them play reigning champs, Chelsea. United ran out 3-0 winners on that day and never really looked back. Despite a shaky start to the season, winning just three games in their opening eight matches -  they only lost one match between the 31st December and the end of the season.
Their attendances towards the end of the season grew as United nearer their fourth league title. 62,277 fans watched United beat second placed 2-1 in their penultimate match at Old Trafford. However by the time they had secured the silverware, just 38,000 saw them beat Portsmouth 1-0 in the final game of the season. United won the league by 11 points – a quick remarkable gap considering this was during the era that a win was worth just two points.
Busby had created a fine team with Tommy Taylor and Dennis Viollet spearheading the front line, scoring 25 and 20 league goals respectively. The youth team were also on form as they won the Youth Cup, featuring the likes of Kenny Morgans, Wilf McGuiness and, of course, a young Bobby Charlton. Matt Busby had built an empire, he had talent everywhere, nothing could stop these boys.
