1911 Championship Team |
Since their first league championship, Manchester United had faltered somewhat. Ending the 1908-09 and 1909-10 seasons 5th and 13th respectively, one could have been forgiven for assuming United were a team in free fall – much like they had been prior to Ernest Mangnall’s appointment in 1903.
United started the 1910-11 season positively beating both Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers but soon faltered with a 2-1 loss at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest. Sandy Turnbull continued his fine form for the club scoring 19 goals across the season, however it was a new signing, Enoch West, who had the most prolific season at the club. Having signed for Forest during the summer, West scored 20 goals (19 in the league) in 38 appearances throughout the 1910-11 season. Both West and Turnbull would later be central to the infamous 1915 betting scandal which also saw United half-back, Arthur Whalley, banned from the game for life after betting on the outcome of United’s Division One match against Liverpool.
United struggled to generate any significant level of momentum throughout the season with their longest winning streak in the league being just five matches. Further compounded by their eight league losses and eight draws. Similarly United’s cup run was hardly in sparkling form, losing to West Ham United in the third round.
With both United and Aston Villa still battling it out for the crown of league champions as the clubs moved into the final two games of the season there was all to play for. And as luck would have it United faced both Villa and Sunderland – who were third in the league – in their last games. A 4-2 loss at Villa Park meant that moving into the final day of the season United were just one point ahead with a slightly worse goal difference, therefore anything other than a win against Sunderland could lead to Villa leapfrogging them and taking the plaudits. Even back then United never did things the easy way! However a 5-1 victory over Sunderland saw the Division One trophy return to Old Trafford for the second time.
By now Mangnall was in charge of an ageing side – Welsh wizard Billy Meredith was 37 (and perceived to have his best years behind him), and many other players were approaching their 30s. Club owner, John Davies – who had already invested much into Manchester United – was unwilling (or unable after purchasing Old Trafford) to offer Mangnall any further funds however the boss had little sympathy for the situation and moved into the waiting arms of rivals, Manchester City.
United revelled in their victory, unaware it would be a further 41 years until they would taste league glory once again.
