Quote of the Century...!! |
Here , Post Sport looks at three notable previous meetings between the managerial heavyweights.
Manchester United 3 Liverpool 1, Old Trafford, League Cup third round, October 31st 1990
Ferguson had appeared close to the sack when Liverpool had won 2-1 at Old Trafford in the First Division in March of 1990. But an FA Cup success had considerably eased the burden and it was now compatriot Dalglish who was coming under pressure.
With United beginning to show signs of developing into the force that would dominate English football for much of the next two decades, goals from Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes and Lee Sharpe sealed a comfortable home success.
Dalglish would leave Liverpool in February 1991 following a 4-4 FA Cup draw against Everton.
Manchester United 1 Blackburn 0, Old Trafford, Premiership, January 22nd 1995
Dalglish and Blackburn were threatening to end United’s two-year reign as league champions as a side spearheaded by the goals of Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer and backed by the investment of Jack Walker threatened to give the Lancashire club a first title in 81 years.
But their hopes of further denting United’s title hopes were undone as Eric Cantona grabbed the winner. Just three days later the Frenchman would launch his infamous kung-fu kick on Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, eventually receiving an eight-month ban that had a major impact as Rovers went on to win the title.
Newcastle 0 Manchester United 1, St James’ Park, Premiership, 21st December 1997
Dalglish had been expected to launch another title challenge having succeeded Kevin Keegan as Magpies boss earlier in the year. But they were already off the pace as Christmas approached during the 1997-98 campaign and the sight of former hero Andy Cole grabbing the winner for the champions did little to improve the mood of the Tyneside faithful.
United went on to miss out on the title to Arsenal while Newcastle finished 13th before suffering FA Cup final heartache against the Gunners. Dalglish was sacked at the start of the following campaign.
