Greatest Gaffer of All Time |
If Sir Alex Ferguson needed any proof that the fires burn as bright as ever on the eve of his 24th anniversary at Old Trafford, it can come on Saturday as he stands on the verge of setting a new personal record in an already incredible career.
Victory against Wolves and the United manager will record his longest undefeated start to a season since succeeding Ron Atkinson on November 6, 1986.
United’s current run of 16 games in all competitions makes them the only side in the Premier League yet to lose this term, even if they do still trail leaders and champions Chelsea by five points.
The last time they managed an equivalent run was at the start of the 1991-92 season, when they were eventually pipped to the title by Leeds.
Ferguson is not one to dwell on such statistics and would gladly trade that unbeaten record for more points on the board – but it is a measure of his continued excellence to still be setting new standards in the twilight of his career.
Sentiment will be put to one side tomorrow when Mick McCarthy’s Wolves head to Old Trafford on the back of shocking the blue half of Manchester last week – and there will be little cause for celebration if United fail the take the chance to close the gap on Chelsea to two points.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side face Liverpool on Sunday and after taking a giant step towards securing qualification to the knockout stage of the Champions League, Ferguson sees this as an ideal opportunity to make a push for the title.
Despite an inconsistent start, including dropped points against Fulham, Everton, Bolton, Sunderland and West Brom, United remain in touching distance of Chelsea. And far from being distracted by party poppers and cake, Ferguson has told his players to cut out the errors that have marred the campaign so far.
“We want to keep the momentum going in the club,” he said. “The most important thing is to keep winning.
“Our form has been good apart from against Sunderland when we didn’t play well. It’s in the record books and there is no point in going on about it, we’ve thrown points away.
“That’s the nature of the Premier League. You do throw points away – but it’s when you are two goals up that it really bites hard. Especially at Manchester United.”
Even before a ball is kicked, Ferguson’s 24th anniversary will be a much more joyous occasion than it might have been.
The contract row with Wayne Rooney and the manager’s masterful handling of the situation was among the most testing times of his tenure at the club...cont
