Fergie’s first championship winning season may have been a bit of a bumpy ride, this cannot be said for his second title, a season later. United took the lead in the Premiership table after just four matches – and remained at the summit for the remainder of the season, accumulating a record 92 points from 42 matches.
Whilst Eric Cantona was the inspirational signing from the previous season, it was the acquisition of Roy Keane which positively influenced United the next. The signing of the Irish midfielder, however, was far from straightforward. Ferguson had admired Keane’s tenacity for some time, but he wasn’t alone – Blackburn, and Jack Walker’s millions, were also interesting in the Nottingham Forest player. Keane and Kenny Dalglish (Rovers’ manager at the time) had a verbal agreement that he was to join the title challengers. Spoiling the party, Ferguson took time to express interest in Keane, explaining that United’s ambition was more in line with his own. Understandably Dalglish was incensed but our boss didn’t care, he had his man.
As spring approached United remained coasting in the league but it was a sad day for the club when, on 20th January 1994, Sir Matt Busby passed away peacefully. Old Trafford turned into a temporary shrine to their legend, his influence and effect on the club has never been forgotten. A statue remains outside the ground, perched high up, just where he belongs.
At one point in the season there was talk of a domestic treble – Ferguson himself wasn’t convinced United could do it, “It’s never been done before. Why should we be any different?” He was right. United lost their first final of the season, a 3-1 Coca Cola cup loss to Aston Villa, ironically being managed by Big Ron. The double though, now that was a possibility. They eased to the title, finishing eight points ahead of second placed Blackburn. An FA Cup final was also on the horizon – against Chelsea, who had already done a league double over United during the season. Not this time though, United dismantled the Londoners 4-0 at Wembley to secure their first double.
